they are really gonna en bloc those lovely buildings?! esp the pearl bank and the ardmore condo!? why why why?! do we really have to!? sigghs someone should really just stop and think about what you are doing... do you really need to build any more tall skinny/slender condos with miniscule units that can supposedly fit a nuclear family? stop those evil developers! these buildings have quality man! soon the old singapore will go... nothing familiar will remain. doesn't that make you sad?

I know... It's really heartbreaking.
I personally think Pearl Bank Apartments is one of S'pore's most interesting apt blding... I love it's form, I love its courtyard concept esp when conceived in the 70s. I always stare out at it from my office when I'm walking towards the bank pantry area, and I am amazed and inspired that architects were so forward-thinking even back then.
But the sad reality is such, that in reality, it all boils down to economic value, esp in S'pore where land is scarce and the population is ever-growing.
When a land is privately owned, the choice is the developer's, to maximise its GFA potential or not.
Also, for a building to be considered for conservation status, it has got to be 30 years old or more. Ultimately, it is difficult to get a developer to conserve and maintain a conserved building when they get nothing to gain from it, and stand to lose instead.
We need to distinguish conservation from mere sentimentality, and to put the nation's future needs over our present wants. Having said that, I still am not clear where the line is drawn.
Just some thoughts from a person who is just beginning to see the other side of urban design/architecture issues, and who sometimes wishes we could all live in a world of make-believe.
